PMT displaces R/M - again
Tempe, Arizona - The ambulance providers in the Rocky Mountain U.S. are seeing a lot of competition. Tempe, Arizona is the latest change with Rural/Metro's Southwest Ambulance being displaced by PMT ambulance. Southwest had been Tempe's 9-1-1 sole ambulance provider for almost twenty years. PMT takes over in May.

RM-Southwest gets CON, hires sacked FD employees
Tucson, Arizona - Rural/Metro's Southwest Ambulance division has gained an operating certificate for a Tucson area fire district. The expanded service area enables the Southern Arizona ambulance provider to provide part-time work to laid EMTs and paramedics who were working for the fire district. The fire district laid off 60% of its firefighters this past week.

Rochester vote keeps Rural/Metro
Rochester, New York - Going against the Rochester Mayor and a review panel, the City Council voted Nov. 20th to retain Rural/Metro in its 19-year run of service to the upper state New York community. The ambulance contract is valued at $15 million to $20 million and its renewal comes at a critical time in Rural/Metro's financial situation. The company is having to restate earnings to its shareholders and its stock has lost some value in the previous weeks.

R/M improves Tenn. response times
Memphis, Tennessee - Now that Shelby County's new, improved and more expensive ambulance system is in place, the Germantown and Collierville fire chiefs are eager to see how fast it is. The ambulance firm Rural/Metro has met its contractual obligation by placing 12 new ambulances around the county by the start of this month.

Rural/Metro income down, gains contract
Scottsdale, Arizona - Rural/Metro has reported its first quarter net income has a 76% drop. However, the company announced a new transport contract in the Nashville area and is hopeful for a 9-1-1 contract renewal in Rochester, New York.

AMR gains Colorado contract
Longmont, Colorado - Ambulance service transistions from Pridemark to AMR. Longmont had been served by Pridemark under a master contract through Boulder County. AMR had previously served all of Boulder County until 1999. Gaining Longmont brings AMR back into the County. The rest of Boulder County will continue to be served by Pridemark.

Why red tape could be costing lives
Belfast - Dave Kiernan from Drogheda, in Co Louth, and Robert Day from Dublin keep up with any news from Ireland about changes in the medical services. Although they are far from home, it is a subject close to their hearts. Both men have made personal sacrifices to advance their knowledge of pre-hospital care. The emergency medical technicians are taking a nine-month course at the Center for Emergency Medicine in Pittsburgh to become certified paramedics.
