Body Mass Index
Body Mass Index (BMI) takes only two anthropometrical measures into account: height and weight. Based on the calculated BMI, health officials categorize associated health risks based on the following:

BMI Classification
<18.5 Underweight
18.5 - 24.9 Normal (healthy)
25 - 29.9 Overweight
30 or higher Obese

One thing the BMI fails to consider is lean body mass. It is very possible for a healthy, muscular individual with very low body fat to be considered obese. For this reason, BMI seems to be more reliable for non-athletes.

Calculating BMI:
BMI = (weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared) multiplied by 705

BMI =
Weight (lb)
--------------
Height (in)2
x 705
