Dallas FFs shot near Superbowl linked to scam
Peoria, Arizona - Two Dallas firefighters attending the Superbowl were shot at a local nightspot after the game. One has died. Police investigators now think there is a link to a counterfiet NFL merchandise scam, but are unsure if the shooting was part of that link. NYC testing new public alert system
New York City, New York - After a state-run e-mail alert system failed to notify downtown residents about a deadly fire in a contaminated building, the city is testing a new emergency notification system in four neighborhoods, including lower Manhattan. The $750,000 pilot program will last six months, city officials said. The city hopes to enroll a total of 100,000 people in the pilot.

Ashland, Pennsylvania - Three pieces of legislation are currently making their way through Pennsylvania's legislature that ould have a profound effect on how municipalities handle and pay for emergency services. The bills seemed to be aimed at doing away with volunteer departments.

Fire chief out, Rural/Metro cuts 40 jobs
Scottsdale, Arizona - Rural/Metro and its Southwest Ambulance division have announced cuts in its managment and support staff in Arizona. The cuts include letting go veteran Fire Chief Gary Morris.

Mesa FFs jumpstart pool safety issue
Mesa, Arizona - Mesa firefighters took to the streets April 20th to talk to the community about swimming pool dangers, launching a three-pronged campaign that will through the weekend. Five children have drowned in Mesa this year, the highest number in the city's history.

Mayors, FFs join to gain service flexibility law
Indianapolis, Indiana - Mayors from across Indiana on April 18th urged the Indiana General Assembly to pass legislation that would give cities and towns more flexibility in how to pay for municipal services. The group is seeking alternatives to reduce the reliance on property taxes. The Professional Firefighters Union of Indiana and the Indiana State Fraternal Order of Police also announced their support for alternative funding sources.

Rural/Metro in board battle - possible sale
Scottsdale, Arizona - In a business page banner headline, The Arizona Republic is reporting that the nation's second largest ambulance firm, Rural/Metro, is in the middle of a board of directors' battle. One possible outcome - the sale of Rural/Metro. The firm leading the effort in the battle owns American Medical Response - the nation's largest ambulance provider. Rural/Metro also provides private fire protection services to communities, airports and industrial plants - it is the nation's largest private fire department.

Phoenix, Arizona - The Rev. Father Carl G. Carlozzi, 64, a former Episcopalian rector, has been the full-time chaplain for the Phoenix Fire Department for two years, after volunteering there for eight years.
